Umiam all set to become Meghalaya’s major tourist hub
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday said the forest department will soon hand over 300 acres of land for development of Umiam area as a major tourist attraction
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said, “We have made substantial progress in the sense that the department of forest has expressed its willingness to part with about 300 acres of land for facilitating growth of tourism in that particular hub and we would like Umiam to be a major tourist attraction of not only Meghalaya but also entire North East.”
“Based on that presentation, the department concerned will be asked to finalise the rest of the details and in principle we have agreed that we will expand Umiam as a tourist hub of the state of Meghalaya,” he said.
He informed that the ambitious project is to expand the units of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) by introducing more facilities, more entertainment zones and also upscale the present accommodation facilities available with the Orchid Lake resort.
“We are also thinking in terms of having water sports entertainment and such other facilities. We are identifying those activities,” he added.
