Undertrial prisoners enlightened on their rights

As part of the Pan India Awareness and Outreach Campaign, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat on Tuesday organised a legal awareness programme at the District Prison and Correctional Home, Jowai. The programme aimed to spread awareness about the Rights of Under Trial Prisoners and Convicts. About 200 jail inmates attended the awareness programme.

Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat NM Momin welcomed all the participants and gave a brief introductory speech on the aims and objectives of the Campaign.

Resource persons, P Paswett, Advocate and R War, Panel Lawyer, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills District spoke on the Rights of the prisoners, Appeal from conviction to higher courts, Pre-mature release, Parole, Functioning of the Prison Legal Aid Clinics, Legal Services Institutions and its functions and Legal Aid and Services.

During the programme, there was an interactive session with the jail inmates and, the Secretary of, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat also assured free legal assistance to the inmates.
