United Opposition Forum demands ouster of Assam Chief Minister, sends letter to Prez, Guv
The Congress-led 18-party United Opposition Forum (UoF) has urged the President and Governor to dismiss Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his communal and unconstitutional statement made on the floor of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
The UoF also plans to file a case at the Dispur police station on Wednesday, seeking legal action against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Forum also demanded a high-level probe into the unaccounted assets of the Chief Minister and his family through a Supreme Court judge.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday night, United Opposition Forum president Bhupen Kumar Borah said: “We all 18 opposition parties condemned the aggressive and communal statement of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as this can fuel communal tension and disrupt peace in society. By this, he is trying to cover up his failure to resolve the basic issues of the people of the state.”
“According to Article 191 (1B) of the Indian constitution, a person with mental instability should be sacked from his post. Nobody in Indian history has declared him a mad dog ever before. We are saddened at the Chief Minister’s comment.,” Borah said.
“Our Governor is now out of the state. We will submit a memorandum to the President of India through our Governor soon after his arrival seeking dismissal of the Chief Minister.” Boral further said.
Borah held a meeting with presidents and secretaries of 18 political parties. MPs Pradyut Bordoloi, Rakibul Hussain, Ajit Kumar Bhuiyan, leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, CPI(M) leader Suprakash Talukdar, UOF secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and others attended the press conference.
Addressing a press conference, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is a madman and Assam is not safe in his hands.
“Sarma never wants the issues of the ethnic communities of Assam to be resolved. This Chief Minister has made the future of the new generation uncertain and he is constantly trying to create conflict between Hindus and Muslims,” Gogoi said.
MP Rakibul Hussain said that after the defeat of Badruddin Ajmal, the Chief Minister has lost direction.
Hussain also said that this Chief Minister does not want the problems of the indigenous people of the state to be resolved.
MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan also said the Chief Minister has failed miserably to grant Schedule Tribe status to six communities.
“The CM could not do this by saying that he would implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord in letter and spirit. The list of all the properties of the Chief Minister, who is busy securing his assets, will be made public soon,” Bhuyan said.
The UOF also passed a resolution in the meeting to republish the impeachment motion against the Chief Minister with new information.
He appealed to all parties to refrain from acts that could destroy the unity and harmony among various ethnic groups of Assam and criticised the Chief Minister for failing to provide security to the people of Assam, especially in controlling crimes against women.
The proposal to hold talks with all nationalist organisations in Assam was also discussed in the meeting. Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, CPI(M)’s Vivek Das, NCP state president Jitendra Nath Bora, APHLC’s John Ingti Kathar, PLP’s Charan Deka as well as Sonowal Kachari Gana Manch leaders in their speeches appealed to all people to maintain restraint in the current situation.
