UPF to project candidate for Speaker’s post
SHILLONG: The United Progressive Front (UPF), a newly floated sub-alliance, has decided to project a candidate for the Assembly Speaker’s post in the upcoming meeting of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) for its consideration.
The UPF was formed by six MLAs who are supporting the National People’s Party (NPP)-led MDA government. It comprises of two political parties – People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and one Independent.
This also came in the wake of the claim made by United Democratic Party (UDP), which is the main ally of the coalition government, that the Assembly’s top post should remain with the party, since it was occupied by its late president Dr Donkupar Roy, who passed away last month.
Revealing the move of the sub-alliance here on Thursday, PDF leader and cabinet minister Hamletson Dohling said, “We will also project our candidate (from the UPF) for the Speaker’s post but the final decision will depend on the MDA (which will be meeting very soon).”
Dohling said that the PDF and also the UPF are going to hold meetings in the coming days to discuss on the matter.
