Upgrade PHC, Umkiang to CHC: Dorbar Shnong
The Dorbar Shnong Umkiang under East Jaintia Hills District has appealed to the Meghalaya Government to upgrade the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Umkiang to the status of Community Health Centre for the benefit of the people living in the border areas of the State.
In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong at his office chamber on Thursday, the Dorbar Shnong Umkiang informed that the present PHC caters to the needs of more than 15000 population living in more than 16 villages and it is the only health care centre along Assam Meghalaya border areas catering to the diverse medical needs of the people.
The Dorbar said, “Many facilities will be made to the people if the Umkiang PHC is upgraded to a CHC and this will help the people to a very large extent not only of the people of Umkiang village but all the people within the bounds of Umkiang PHC.”
The memorandum asserted that there is an urgent need to revamp the health infrastructure so as to enable the people to attain and receive the best possible health services and thereby reduce the pressure of going to the urban areas for health care.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that he will take up their demand for upgrading the PHC to CHC with the Chief Minister and the Minister concerned.
