Urban Affairs dept to soon allot land for construction of central jail at Mawdiangdiang
Minister in-charge Home (Prison) Sanbor Shullai on Thursday informed that the urban affairs department will soon allot 25 acres of land to the prison department for construction of the central jail at Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong Township.
Speaking to reporters, Shullai said a resolution on this regard was passed during a joint meeting of the two departments last week.
“In principle, we have signed the resolution that 25 acres of land at Mawdiangdiang will be allotted to the prison department for the proposed construction of the central jail,” he said.
He informed that the existing land where the Shillong district jail is presently located at jail road will be handed over to the urban affairs department. They are proposing to construct parking facilities, shopping complexes and others to create employment for the people, he added.
When asked, the minister said that the capacity of the central jail will be for 5,000 inmates which includes 2,500 males and 2,500 females.
