USTM hosts seminar on sociology of health & well-being, focuses on life-saving skills and Ayurveda
The Department of Sociology at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) organized a seminar and Value-Added Course on the Sociology of Health & Well-being at the NKC Auditorium today. The event brought together experts from diverse medical backgrounds to discuss critical aspects of health, emergency care, and alternative medicine.
The seminar featured two distinguished speakers—Dr. Nayem Raja, Senior Consultant in the Department of Congenital Heart Surgery at Health City Hospital, and Dr. Mofida Khatun, Assistant Professor in the Department of Kayachikitsha at UHAN, IAMC.

Dr. Nayem Raja led the first session, focusing on essential life-saving techniques, particularly in cardiac emergencies. He addressed common misconceptions and stigmas surrounding various health conditions, providing students and dignitaries with practical knowledge on emergency response. The interactive session included voluntary demonstrations, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in basic life-saving procedures.
In the second session, Dr. Mofida Khatun introduced Ayurveda as an alternative and holistic approach to health and well-being. She outlined fundamental Ayurvedic principles, emphasizing their role in disease prevention and overall wellness. She also highlighted the accessibility of Ayurvedic resources and their relevance in modern healthcare.
The seminar opened with a welcome address by Dr. Kughatoli V. Aye, Head of the Department of Sociology, setting the stage for an engaging and insightful discussion. The event provided a valuable learning platform for students, reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in health and well-being.
