VDP apprehend five betel nuts smugglers along Indo-Bangla border
Five persons were apprehended by the members of the village defence party (VDP) of Muktapur along the Indo-Bangla border in West Jaintia Hills, while they were trying to load betel nuts (supari) smuggled from Bangladesh to the state.
The incident took place at around 3.30 am on Sunday.
A Bolero Pick (ML 04C 5805) along with over 50 sacks of betel nuts were seized.
The dorbar shnong of Muktapur has also filed an FIR with the Muktapr patrolling post against the five persons which include Donbok Buam from Umladkhur village and January Shylla from Trangblang.
The FIR said that the accused persons has also assaulted VDP members when they stopped their vehicle.
The seized betel nuts from Bangladesh was meant for supply to Assam and other states.
According to the dorbar shnong, such illegal activities are against the protocol of the government to fight against the spread of COVID-19.
Meanwhile Jaintia Students Union (JSU), War Jaintia Circle recovered 50 sacks of supari near Lakroh river bank abandoned by suspected smugglers. An FIR has been lodged in this connection at Muktapur police patrolling post.
