Vehicular movement through Umiam Bridge will be closed for six hours on March 31

The retrofitting of Umiam Dam and Spillway Bridges will be carried out for a period of eight days from March 31, to April 8 this year where they will be complete traffic blockage of the Umiam Bridge.

According to the schedule fixed by the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL), there will be complete traffic blockage of the Umiam Bridge for minimum of 6 hours on 1st day i.e. March 31, this year from 8:00 AM to 2:00 P.M. Only ambulances will be allowed to ply through the bridge during work.

As per schedule, after work at bridge is completed, half road will be opened i.e. downstream of the Bridge but only for vehicles up up to 4 (four) Tons weight during the 8 days from March 31 upto 7.00 A.M of 8 April 2024)

From the Eight day i.e. from 7.00 A.M onwards of 8 April 2024, vehicles up to 15 Tons will be allowed i.e. downstream of the Bridge.

The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills & Ri Bhoi Districts will initiate proposed arrangements in co-ordination with the Police Departments during the period.

Both district administrations will identify the locations before and after the Umiam Dam where vehicles will be stopped during the first 6 (six) Hours i.e. from 8:00 AM to 2:00 P.M. on the 31st March 2024.

The District Administration will ensure plying of only Ambulances during the above period from 8:00 AM to 2:00 P.M.

They will allow vehicles up to 4 Tons only w.e.f. 2:00 pm on the 31 March 2024 upto 7.00 am on the 8 April, 2024 and to allow vehicles up to 15 Tons w.e.f. 7.00 am on the 8th April 2024 onwards.

The Police Department will depute Officers entrusted with traffic management for coordination with MePGCL Officers. The Police department will inform them at least one hour before the scheduled total closure of the bridge and on completion of the work.

The PWD Department will have to examine and identify the alternative routes during the total closure of the Umiam Dam for 6 (six) hours on 31 March 2024 w.e.f. 8:00 AM to 2:00 P.M. Also, for diversion of traffic weighing more than 4 (four) Tons w.e.f. 31 March 2024 from 2:00 P.M. till 7.00 AM of 8 April 2024.
