VPP emerges single largest party by winning 17 seats in KHADC, NPP in JHADC
The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) emerged as the single-largest party in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Monday, by crossing the halfway mark by winning 17 seats while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) also became the single-largest party in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by clinching 13 seats out of 29 constituencies that went to polls on February 21.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), which is an NPP’s ally in the MDA government and has 12 MLAs, emerged as the second largest party in KHADC, winning 5 seats, followed by NPP with 4 seats, 2 Independents and 1 Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).
Three political parties that drew a blank in the KHADC polls include Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM).
In the JHADC, the VPP became the second largest party by winning 8 seats, followed by the Congress 3 and UDP 3 and 2 Independents while the BJP and the HSPDP also drew a blank.

The VPP, has won with a thumping majority in majority of the constituencies under the KHADC in which its candidates managed to unseat two former chief executive members (CEMs) and former chairman of the Council.
VPP candidate from Mawphlang-Diengiei Lancaster Marbaniang defeated the KHADC chairman and four time NPP MDC Lamphrang Blah by a comfortable margin of 6038 votes, VPP candidate from Nongthymmai Winston Tony Lyngdoh defeated KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem (NPP) by a margin of 3832 votes and VPP candidate from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah Strong P Kharjana unseated former KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem by 254 votes.
The party also performed exceptionally well in the constituencies of the four MLAs – Eddieson Kharumnuid from Mawlai won the highest margin of 12347 votes, Bill C Wankhar from Sohryngkham with 6752 votes, Kitbor Syiem from Nongkrem with 2250 votes and Denzil R Chen from Jaiaw with 1905 votes.
The other winning candidates of the VPP include Aibandaplin L Nonglait from Mylliem with 11,225 votes and Dr Juristman Iawphniaw – Nongstoin (8718), Kynjohlang Rangtong – Mawhati (1053), Banrikus Nongsteng – Umsning (570, Isynei Hinge – Umroi (2008), Seiborlang Warbah – Mawkynrew (7959), , Shemborlang Rynjah – Langkyrdem-Laitkroh (1489), Deity Majaw – Laitumkhrah-Malki (819), Powell Sohkhlet – Pariong – Mawthadraishan (3897) and Pynkhrawboklin Kharjahrin – Mawkyrwat (3548).
The five UDP MDCs – former KHADC chief and opposition leader Titosstarwell Chyne retained the Sohra by winning with a margin of 863 votes, two MLAs – Synshar Kupar R Thabah – Nongspung-Sohiong won by 281 votes and Pius Marwein – Langrin won by a margin of 2899 votes, Barikupar Synrem – Shella (532), Equator Nongrang – Mairang-Nongkhlaw (2858).
The four NPP MDCs include Sosthenes Sohtun – Jirang (7832), Rona Khymdeit – Nongpoh (3644), Grace Mary Kharpuri – Nongshken (3313) and Alvin K Sawkmie – Mawsynram (5035).
The two Independents – Lurshai Kharbani – Rymbrai-Jyrngam (2142) and Ricky Shullai – Laban-Mawprem (1023) and HSPDP – Srally Rashir from Mawshynrut (3229).
In the Jaintia Hills region, as many as five former chief executive members (CEMs) were re-elected to the JHADC.
These include JHADC chief Thombor Shiwat from Moodop Umladang, who defeated his closest rival by a thin magin of 102 votes, Hambertus Nongtdu, Madonbai Rymbai, Andrew Shullai and Moonlight Pariat.
The 13 NPP MDCs – Het Pohthmi – War West (474 margin), Jesse Suiam – Moodymmai-Nongkroh (433), Reformingson Lamare – Nartiang-Wahiajer (278), Thombor Shiwat – Moodop-Umladang (102), Pheinshwa Nanglein – Mynsngat-Khanduli (301), Aiborlang Shadap – Barato-Mukroh (140), Wormandship Shadap – Mowkaiaw (790), Bisonroy Iano – Raliang (984), Mihnyngkong Sutnga – Shangpung (1247), Seiborlang Shadap – Sutnga-Narwan (857), NPP Hambertus Nongtdu – Sutnga-Nongkhlieh (498), Krison Langstang – Sumer (2040) and Sankey Shangpung – Bataw-Lakadong (1492).
The 8 VPP MDCs are Jamshaphrang Pohtam – War Central (431 votes), Nehimaia Lamare – Mukhla Ummulong (224), LAiawanlamjinghun Khynriam – Mynso-Nongjngi (1845), Daeimi Liam – Shilliang Myntang (244), Gresentus Susngi – Nangbah-Mihmyntdu (1004), Awhai Andrew Shullai – Jowai North (4602), Soki Lapasam – Muthlong-Sohkymphor (395), Deivipaya T Tongper – Narpuh (717).
The three UDP MDCs – Lasky Rymbai – Tuber-Wapungshnong (361), Wailadameshwa Siangshai – Musniang-Rangad (2638) and Wonly L Chyrmang – War East (384 votes) and the three Congress MDCs are Madonbai Rymbai – Amwi Khliehtyrshi (988), Rikut Parein – Saphai-Sahsniang (289) and Lalwilliama Theite – Saipung-Nongkhlieh (299),
The two independents include Moonlight Pariat – Jowai South (522) and Violet Lyngdoh – Rymbai-Khliehriat (1835).
