VPP MLA urges Govt to assess feasibility of using old steel bridge as alternative route
Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum on Monday urged the state government to send technical experts to assess the feasibility of utilizing the old steel bridge as a viable alternative following the ongoing repairing of Umiam bridge.
In a letter to the power minister Abu Taher Mondal, Nongrum said that he had personally conducted an inspection on the current state of the subway road at Umiam bridge
“It is evident that this existing old steel bridge associated with Umiam that has historically served as a viable alternative,” he said while adding, “I hereby request your immediate intervention to direct the technical experts from MePGCL to asses the feasibility of utilizing the old steel bridge passing through the Rapsang Group of Industry, heading towards exit opposite Jack Well pump.”
“Considering the ongoing repairs of the main Umiam bridge, which may not know what time it may be completed, the hardship endured by the general public is significant. To provide swift relief, I implore you to dispatch an expert team to evaluate the viability of reinstating this alternate route. So as to re-open and make the route functional if there is feasibility and by maintaining one-way traffic, particularly within this junction, which will be more helpful,” the MLA wrote.
Furthermore, Nongrum said it is vital to address the accessibility for emergency situations, particularly for patients. Ensuring smooth transportation links for those who have to approach to the airport and railway station is of utmost importance during this challenging period.
“While I, as a layman, can observe the practicality of this solution, it ultimately depends on the government’s willingness to act decisively,” he said while adding “ Due to the demand of the situation, it is crucial for the Government to demonstrate its will to act and I also firmly believe that with the government’s determination, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished.”
He also expressed strong hope that the government will consider this matter urgently and take decisive steps to provide relief to the general public at large.
