VPP says it is fitting to rebrand MPSC to ‘Mostly Politicians Service Commission’
The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday accused the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) of catering to the whims of politicians and those in power and said it is fitting to rebrand it as ‘Mostly Politicians’ Service Commission.
The statement has been made while referring to the result of the written test of the MCS examination.
“MPSC is meant to serve the state and its people by recruiting the most talented and capable individuals. However, if it continues to cater to the whims of politicians and those in power, it’s only fitting to rebrand it as the ‘Mostly Politicians’ Service Commission.’ And if getting a job requires lining someone’s pockets, then it’s more like the ‘Money Pays Service Commission’,” the VPP said in a statement.
“The MPSC’s purpose is to ensure fairness and meritocracy in the recruitment process. The MPSC is not a private property of any government in power, business interest, NGOs or political parties. It must maintain neutrality, objectivity and detach itself from any political affiliations and appointments,” it added.
The VPP alleged that the result of the written test of the MCS examination conducted by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission has raised many questions while many candidates were left dumbfounded and cheated.
“It is well known those in the present government are involved in the culture of nepotism favouring only those associated and close to the government, the MPSC therefore, failed to gain the trust and confidence of the youth,” it said while adding “Judging from the results of the MCS, many seem it certain that there is a serious disease that hijack and ails the MPSC.”
Further, the VPP said that to the public at large there is a prevailing perception that irregularities and incompetency for years on end have been allowed to continue affecting many job aspirants and those who genuinely want to serve the state.
“From the recent MCS examinations, it now appears that nepotism and favoritism is the hallmark of this constitutional body. It is also a terrible and toxic state of affair when this important institution fails to conduct examinations with full confidence of the people has now lost the trust of many educated youths,” it said while adding “As citizens of this state, we have reached a tipping-point where we cannot just lay low, discuss and debate.”
Demanding that the MPSC must disclose how candidates have been selected and recruited, what is the cut off marks, the VPP said the MPSC cannot hide under the cloak of privacy and protection of individual rights, it is a public institution and bound by the principles of justice, transparency and accountability.
