VPP suspends North Shillong MLA, 4 others for anti-party activities
The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday suspended its North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum for a period of three years along with four other members for indulging in anti-party activities.
The decision was taken after the party’s state executive committee had carefully examined the replies of the MLA and the four other leaders – Snarbor Laloo, Imti Jamir, Wilstone Sohshang and Richinbusiness Marwein – to the show cause notices issued to them on March 1.
In a letter to Nongrum, VPP vice president Dr Kara H Shen said, “It is observed that your reply, rather than expressing remorse or acknowledging the concerns raised, was defensive, confrontational, and lacked any sign of regret for actions deemed detrimental to the Party’s interests. Your approach in responding to the Show Cause Notice further indicates a defiance of party discipline and principles, which cannot be overlooked.”
“After due deliberation, the Party finds your explanation unsatisfactory and, in exercise of its authority under Article III, Clause 5 of the Constitution of the Voice of the People Party, you are hereby suspended from the Party for a period of 3 years with immediate effect,” he added.
“During the period of suspension: You shall cease to hold any position, responsibility, or membership rights within the Party. You shall not represent the Party in any forum or public platform. You are advised to refrain from any actions that may further tarnish the image of the Party,”
In a letter to the four suspended members, Dr Shen stated, “However, instead of addressing the concerns raised, your replies were defensive, confrontational, and devoid of any acknowledgment of wrongdoing or remorse. The Party finds your explanations unsatisfactory and unacceptable.
Therefore, in accordance with Article III, Clause 5 and Article XII of the Constitution of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), you are hereby suspended from the Party with immediate effect, pending further decision by the State Executive Committee.”
“During this period of suspension: You shall cease to hold any official position or responsibility within the Party. You shall be prohibited from representing the Party in any forum or public platform. You are expected to abide by the Party’s decision and refrain from any further actions that may harm its integrity and reputation,” he further stated in the letter.
