Wahiajer to host Meghalaya State League opener: 7 Wasa United vs. Shillong Lajong set for exciting match
Meghalaya’s top clubs are set to kick off the 4th Meghalaya State League (MSL 4) 2024 on Saturday, October 26, marking the biggest statewide club-level tournament in the region. The inaugural match will feature two former champions: 7 Wasa United, the inaugural winners, and Shillong Lajong, who triumphed in 2019.
The tournament will commence at the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex in Wahiajer, West Jaintia Hills, with the opening ceremony starting at 1 PM, grace by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Organized by the Meghalaya Football Association and fully supported by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the MSL brings together the best clubs from local leagues affiliated with district associations.
Rangdajied United FC enters the tournament as the defending champions, having secured victory against Khliehmawlieh Youth Club in last year’s final, marking them as the third different team to lift the coveted trophy.
This season introduces a new format with an increase in the number of groups to six, featuring four teams in each group. An extra round of action has also been added with the introduction of quarterfinals. The top team from each group, along with the two best second-placed teams overall, will qualify for the knockout stage.
Group E matches will be hosted in Wahiajer, which will utilize the new stadium funded by the state government for the first time during this prestigious tournament.
Tyrsad will also serve as a new venue, known for its passionate football fans, while Tura, Shillong, Mawkyrwat, and Khliehriat return as familiar locations for matches this season.
