The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with several district departments, organized a Buyer-Seller Meet from December 5 to 7, 2024, at the Jrisalein Playground, Chuwakhu, Jowai. The event was inaugurated by local MLA and Chairman of MUDA, Wailadmiki Shylla, who served as the chief guest.
In his address, Shylla emphasized that the initiative aims to promote local farmers’ products while also providing a platform for youths seeking employment to gain valuable insights. He urged farmers to actively engage with each other, share innovative ideas, and maintain a welcoming attitude at the stalls. He also encouraged young people to take advantage of government schemes and consider starting their own businesses, highlighting the potential for job creation.
Deputy Commissioner B.S. Sohliya, IAS, explained that the Buyer-Seller Meet facilitates exchanges of ideas among farmers from across the district and state, helping them learn and improve their production. He stressed the importance of using eco-friendly bags, urging all participants to replace plastic bags with biodegradable alternatives.
Additional Deputy Commissioner F.B. Basan, also Project Director of DRDA, Jowai, noted that the event serves as a valuable opportunity for both farmers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to showcase their products and tools, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. He also mentioned that the event would provide a platform for local youths to showcase their talents through musical performances, traditional dances, and a fashion show, promoting local culture and creativity.
Over the course of the three days, around 120 stalls displayed a variety of products, including organic vegetables, fruits, processed food, spices, and local crafts. A food court featuring regional specialties attracted visitors. The event also included stalls offering career guidance and information on overseas employment opportunities.
In addition, certificates and toolkits were distributed to trainees who completed their training in various trades under the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS).
