West Jaintia Hills District Magistrate bans activities polluting Myntdu River
West Jaintia Hills District Magistrate BS Sohliya, on June 26, reimposed Section 144 CrPC, prohibiting sand mining and stone quarrying along the Myntdu River and its riverbed.
The order stated, “It has been widely observed that the quality of water in the Myntdu River and its tributaries is severely affected and muddy due to erosion and the depositing of debris in the important catchment areas of the Myntdu River.”
“There have been illegal mining activities reported along the riverbed of the Myntdu River. All the above have contributed to the significant pollution of the river, which has resulted in the contamination of the water supply for the entire town of Jowai,” the order added.
The order also prohibited washing clothes and vehicles, dumping spoils, and disposing of solid and liquid waste materials along the course of the Myntdu River, as well as disposing of waste/muck from road construction into the Myntdu River.
Additionally, the order banned dumping waste, including diapers and sanitary pads, into the river.
