Will work in tandem with Ayurveda: Dr Puranik at USTM
AIIMS Guwahati Executive Director Dr. Ashok Puranik on Saturday expressed optimism about the future of Ayurveda, describing it as a promising field poised to complement modern medicine.
Dr. Puranik’s remarks came during the second foundation day celebration of the Indian Ayurvedic Medical College (IAMC) at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Saturday.
Dr. Puranik emphasized the importance of integrating Ayurveda with advancements in biotechnology and genetics, highlighting the potential benefits this synergy could bring to healthcare.
He pointed out the necessity of a research-driven approach to fully understand both the benefits and potential side effects of Ayurvedic treatments.
“Research is essential to understand the full spectrum of medicine effects. Even in allopathy, we recommend yoga exercises. Students should carry a research mindset throughout their careers,” he stated, encouraging the medical students present to pursue knowledge with a critical and open mind.
Addressing an audience that included doctors, staff, and aspiring Ayurvedic practitioners, Dr. Puranik reinforced that Ayurveda, when backed by scientific research, could become a powerful complement to conventional medicine, ultimately advancing holistic health and wellness in India.
The foundation day celebrations marked IAMC’s successful first year since receiving approval from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine under USTM. The programme began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, attended by dignitaries including Dr. Puranik, Dr. Swapan Kr. Chakraborty, former Head of the Department of Rog Nidan at Government Ayurvedic College, Guwahati; Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM; Padma Shri Dr.SarbeswarSahariah, Pro Vice Chancellor of USTM; and Dr. B.K. Das, Principal of PIMC.
Dr. Rama Kanta Sharma, Principal of IAMC, delivered the welcome address, followed by an insightful address from Prof. G.D. Sharma on the potential of Ayurveda and IAMC’s mission. Dr. Swapan Kr. Chakraborty spoke on Ayurveda as a holistic way of life, while Padma Shri Dr. SarbeswarSahariah praised Ayurveda’s rich traditions and envisioned a bright future for Ayurvedic medicine, inspiring young Ayurvedic doctors to advance clinical and pharmaceutical research.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma, Advisor of IAMC, and a cultural performance by IAMC students and hospital staff, celebrating the vibrant heritage of Ayurveda and the institution’s achievements.
