World Environment day celebrated in West Jaiñtia Hills
JOWAI: World Environment Day was celebrated in many parts of District today. The Divisional Soil and water Conservation, West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai celebrated the World Environment day at Larnai village under the theme, “Air Pollution” in which Minister of Soil and Water Conservation Department Sniawbhalang Dhar was the Chief Guest and Local MDC Jesse Suaim the Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest Sniawbhalang Dhar said preservation of the mother Earth is the need of the hour, we need to preserve and conserve it before it becomes a challenging factor in our State, as it happens in cities like Delhi and others where daily life has become so difficult and challenging, air and waters are polluted by environmental waste. Therefore as responsible citizens and being privileged to have been born in this State blessed us with fresh air & water, need to take care of the environment and be part of the Meghalaya one Citizen one Tree campaign, to preserve the environment not for ourselves but for the generations to come.
District Project Manager, NABARD G. N Kharlukhi brief on the springshed projects that have been implemented in the District. Funded by National Adaptation fund for Climate change, Ministry of Environment forest and Climate Change sponsored through NABARD.
Later, Minister of Soil and Water Conservation along with the Local MDC, officers from the Soil Department, Village Headman Kayous Kharbihthai and others planted Champa and Puma sapling at Larnai Springshed Cluster today. Around 3500 saplings were planted.
The formal programme was chaired by the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer E.Laloo.
The office of the District Legal Service Authority, West Jaintai District celebrated the WED by conducting cleaning drive and planting around 200 saplings at Ummulong village under the initiative taken by the Secretary District Legal Service DS Marbaniang and the District Session Judge E Kharumnuid, the Superintendent of Police Shri. Lakador Syiem, MPS also participated in the Cleaning Drive.
The Office of the Superintendent of Police, West Jaiñtia planted around 500 saplings at Jowai Police Reserve. The Superintendent of Police Lakador Syiem, MPS, the Additional Superintendent of Police, B Chettri, MPS officers, staffs and students of Jowai Police School took part.
The Office of the Fire Service, Jowai also planted saplings in and around the campus. The 3rd MLP (1st IR) BN celebrated WED planting at Sahbsein WED was also celebrated by various Schools, localities, villages, NGOs plating sapling, creating awareness on the need of the hour to save the mother Earth.
