Youth demands arrest of sordar of Syntung
The sordar of Syntung village has been accused of being involved in the mob lynching incident which led to the recent killing of a youth from Madanrting.
This was revealed by one of the youths, who escaped the mob attack, during a press conference held at the Shillong Press Club here on Wednesday.
The youth was able to identify the sordar of Syntung village, Robert Pale while watching his statement on the incident which was shown in the local news channels yesterday.
Pale while addressing the media on Tuesday had claimed that he doesn’t know anybody from the mob or the village they belong to.
However, Alfready Sohtun, who managed to escape to a nearby jungle, alleged that sordar was also involved in beating and slapping him and his other friend, after they came out of the jungle the next morning before they were rescued by the police.
The allegation was quite contrary to the claims made by Pale that he along with the executive members of the dorbar of Syntung village had made all efforts to defend the nine youths from the angry mob.
Asked, Sohtun said that he would definitely lodge an FIR with a request that action should also be taken as the sordar.
The nine youths from Madanrting had gone for a picnic to Syntung village under Mawkynrew block in East Khasi Hills District to celebrate a friend’s birthday on Sunday.
However on their way back, they were suddenly attacked by villagers on suspicion of being menshohnoh at Pashang village, about 10 km away from Syntung village.
As a result, Macmillan Kharshandy succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital while two others Ricky Dkhar and Teiborlang Kharbyngar sustained head injuries.
Banteilang Kharumnuid also recalled that they were attacked just because they got lost while trying to come back to Shillong.
“When we were stopped by the villagers, we did request them to let us go and that we are from Madanrting but they are not willing to listen,” he said.
Condemning the horrific incident, the four organizations including Seng Samla of Madanrting demanded the authority concerned to immediately arrest the sordar of Syntung village and all those involved in spreading false rumours which has led to lost of a precious soul.
“The sordar of Syntung should be arrested for his involvement in the incident (based on the statement of the youth),” HNYF leader Donbok Dkhar said.
President of Seng Samla Roderick Rajee also urged the police department through its cyber crime to nab all the villagers including those responsible for taking video clipping of the brutal assault on the youths.
“The seng samla along with the KSU, HNYF and FKJGP strongly demand stern action against these people, who dare to take the law in their own hands,” he said.
A demand was also made to ban Syntung village as a tourist spot on the ground that it is not safe for people to visit the area.
On the other hand, headman of Madanrting E Kharkongor questioned the failure of the dorbar shnong in those areas to prevent such unfortunate and avoidable incident. He said that dorbar shnong should know that nobody is allowed to take the law into their own hands whatever the case may be.
“The death of (L) Macmillan is a big loss to his family as he has been supporting them by supplying water (with his water tanker),” he said. (L) Macmillan was laid to rest on Tuesday.
Kharkongor also appeal to all those who are involved in the incident to come forward and surrender before the authority. “We encourage them to accept their mistake and surrender,” the headman said.
Meanwhile, 27 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the mob lynching incident.
