Zero tolerance: East Khasi Hills bans unauthorized Toll Collection
East Khasi Hills, District Magistrate SC Sadhu, IAS, has issued a prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC, banning toll collection throughout East Khasi Hills District.
The order aims to prevent law and order issues and strongly prohibits the operation of unauthorized toll collection at Check Gates/Toll Gates and any form of forcible collection along the National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads of East Khasi Hills.
“It has been brought to the notice of the undersigned that the plying of limestone export trucks from Umdud to Zero Point road, part of the route leading to Majai LCS, was stopped by the inhabitants of Majai. The exporters have agreed to voluntarily halt the plying of trucks till an amicable solution is arrived at between the two parties, i.e., Dorbar Shnong of Majai and Syiem of Sohra. There is illegal collection of toll by the Syiem of Sohra from export trucks that pass through Majai Land Custom Station at Rs. 400/- (Rupees Four Hundred) per export truck which may lead to a Law and Order situation,” read the order.
The Government of Meghalaya has taken a firm stand and adopted a “Zero Tolerance” Policy towards the existence of any illegal collection of Toll/Check gate or forcible collection from traffic plying along the National Highways, State Highways, and Major District Roads of East Khasi Hills.
The District Magistrate warns that the installation of illegal Toll/Check gates and barriers for forcible collection obstructs seamless traffic flow, causing inconvenience to road users and posing hazardous safety risks that may lead to road accidents.
