The Government of Meghalaya has issued a public advisory for parents and guardians to ensure the safety and well-being of students from the state who are studying in schools and colleges outside Meghalaya and residing in hostels far from home.

According to the Commissioner & Secretary, Education Department, Government of Meghalaya, the advisory is intended to help parents and students take simple but important steps to stay safe while pursuing education outside the state.

The Education Department has urged all parents and guardians to follow a safety checklist before enrolling their children in institutions beyond state borders. These include:

Seek Government-Recognized Institutions: Choose hostels and schools that are officially recognized and have a history of maintaining proper safety standards.
Verify Legitimacy: Ensure that the school, college, or hostel where your child will reside is legally registered and recognized by the appropriate government authorities. Avoid unregistered or unverified institutions.
Check Safety Standards: Confirm that the hostel maintains proper living conditions, security measures, medical facilities, and staff accountability before enrolling your child.
Conduct Background Checks: Research the institution’s reputation, management, and safety measures. Speak with current students and their families if possible.
Stay Connected: Maintain regular communication with your child and check in frequently regarding their living conditions, well-being, and any concerns they might have.
Report Suspicious Activities: If you come across any illegal or suspicious activities in a hostel, report them to the local authorities, the concerned education department, and law enforcement agencies.
Emergency Preparedness: Equip your child with essential emergency contacts, including local authorities, nearby relatives or family friends, and other trusted individuals who can provide immediate assistance if needed.
Visit the Hostel: Personally visit the hostel to ensure it meets the necessary safety and hygiene standards.

Advisory for Students:

Open Communication: Share your experiences, concerns, or discomforts with your parents or guardians. Transparent communication is vital for addressing issues promptly.
Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a student and hostel resident. Understanding these can empower you to recognize and report any violations or unsafe conditions.
Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts, including the Meghalaya government helpline, local police, local authorities, law enforcement, medical facilities, and trusted family members or friends who can assist in times of distress.
